Following a premature reveal, Valve has reported that all the significant Half-Life games and add-ons are now available as part of a pre-Alyx promotion on Steam for free. This free to play offer extends to Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and its supporting episodes, and major additions like Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life 1: Source, and Half-Life: Blue Shift.
However, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is still $4.99. Gamers kindly note that this is free to play and not free to own offer. You can only play the old Half-Life games for free until Half-Life: Alyx comes out.
Half-Life is the hallmark franchise that set Valve among the most lauded developers in the gaming industry. The series spanned seven titles from the first Half-Life in 1998, leaving the world in 2007 with a doozy of a cliff hanger with the release Half-Life 2: Episode 2. And although it’s not the notoriously awaited Half-Life 3, the latest Half-Life: Alyx is set to be Valve’s return to the franchise after more than 12 years, and the studio is all set to release the first full-fledged VR title.
It’s been a hot minute for many since they played the classic series; as for others, Half-Life might simply have been before their time. Valve has made all seven titles free to play until the release of Half-Life: Alyx this March to refamiliarize (or newly introduce) Half-Life to the world.
This wouldn’t be the first time Valve has promoted the original Half-Life games during the Alyx launch. Soon after the VR sequel was announced, both games were available for just $1 on Steam. So it would come as no surprise to see Valve give away the original games to drum up hype for Alyx.
